Brandon Nickolas was struck by a West Sacramento Police cruiser Tuesday night, with such force that it severed him in half.

The cruiser had been speeding to respond to a backup call from another officer, who was chasing a teen that had allegedly stolen a car.

Though Nickolas was described as a transient by officers this week, our research shows that wasn’t the case in the recent past.

He lived here along Sacramento’s Bluebird Lane for some part of last year.

Neighbors who knew the 31-year-old Nickolas were too skittish to appear on camera, but they described Nickolas as a meek, gentle individual.

While witnesses to his gruesome death told investigators he appeared very drunk, stumbling all over the road moments before impact, his old neighbors believe a good deal of his unsteadiness was due to  persistent confusion from a long-standing mental condition.

They are shocked someone they once shared a wall with met with such a violent end.
