Big time track and field may be headed back to Sacramento. The Sacramento Sports Commission – an arm of the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau – has bid for the 2014 United States Track and Field Outdoor Championships, according to Commission Director Mike Sophia.

Sophia told FOX40 News the formal bid was forwarded to USATF in mid-May. Sophia expects to learn within the next thirty days if Sacramento’s effort is successful.

The best track and field athletes in the country compete in the National Championships, which every four years becomes the US Olympic Trials. Sacramento has twice hosted the Olympic Trials, leading up to the Olympics in 2000 and 2004. The city’s track history also includes four NCAA Championships in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The Sacramento proposal for the 2014 meet included Sacramento State as the venue, with the meet to be scheduled June 26-29. There is a possibility the national juniors competition could be held here in conjunction with the 2014 National Championships. Sophia indicated USATF has not decided how it will schedule the junior’s meeting, saying that is still “up in the air’.
