A successful Bay Area restaurateur with Sacramento roots is preparing to open a taqueria in a now-vacant building at Broadway and 35th Street in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood.

“We go into areas that kind of need a little bit of a lift,” said Tom Schnetz. “And this to me is perfect.”

Schnetz is partnering with his brother, David, in the yet-to-be named business. They grew up in Land Park, just a few miles away from the restaurant site.

Oak Park is near and dear to the brothers also because their family owned Esther’s Bakery there.

The neighborhood, which once fell into disrepair, is now seeing an abundance of new development.

“It’s a neighborhood with a lot of character,” Schnetz told FOX40. “And people are finally seeing that, and wanting to help and bring it back to life I think.”

Schnetz said the restaurant will feature authentic fresh ingredients in a comfortable artistic atmosphere. It will have a full bar, and employ up to 30 people.

“We go into areas that…need a little bit of a lift,” Schnetz said. “And this to me is perfect.”

A specific date has not yet been set, but Schnetz is planning on a February 2016 opening.

The Bay Area restaurants opened by Schnetz are Tacubaya in Berkeley, and Flora, Fauna, Doña Tomás and Xolo in Oakland.
