High school basketball has almost the same longevity at Sleep Train Arena as the Kings – more than 20 years.

Yet, like Kings fans, there is real concern about how much longer it will stay there.

“My gut feeling is, if the Maloofs and the Kings relocate, I think high school basketball will end here after a while,” said Joe Davidson a reporter with the Sacramento Bee.

It’s no secret the arena isn’t getting better with age.  College basketball, which used to bring it’s tournament to the Arena just about every year, stopped in 2007 for that very reason.  So it makes sense the folks who run the high school tournament are a bit nervous about a sprinkle-down effect if the Kings leave.

“I’ve lost a little sleep,” revealed Sac Joaquin Section Commissioner Pete Saco.  “It’s a concern.  It’s or wish and hope though that this can continue.”

If the Kings do leave, the High School Tournament each year would be the only basketball entertainment value around.

“We believe that something will be worked out,” said Saco.  “Whether it’s here, or if a new arena gets built, we’ll be part of that plan.”
