A big name in wine is choosing to leave Napa and come to Lodi to expand their company.

The company that owns Sutter Home, the Trinchero Family Estates, has been purchasing most of their grapes from Lodi and trucking them to Napa. Recently, they decided that wasn’t good business.

Now they will be making their wine in Lodi.

“It really is a big deal. It really speaks volumes about the quality fruit and the quality of wine that is being made in Lodi right now,” said Bob Colarossi, with Estate Crush.

“We produce more wine grapes here in the Lodi Appellation then Napa and Sonoma put together,” said Pat Patrick, with the Chamber of Commerce.

Patrick says such a large company choosing to expand in Lodi instead of Napa just proves what they say they have known for years.

“Napa has its place, but we have potentially bigger place and a different place,” said Patrick.

“Everyone is starting to put Lodi on the label now, in the past they would just say California. People are now proud its Lodi and they are driving that message because the consumer recognizes it as a quality wine making region,” said Colarossi.

The company has a small facility off of I-5 they currently have 50 employees but they will be expanding to 400 people.

“Four hundred new families or 400 families maybe that aren’t working right now that are getting back to work in this geographic area would be great,” Colarossi.
