This summer day, politics are not the center of attention at the California State Capitol. Instead, athletes competing in the US Track and Field Championships are doing the shot put event.

“Hopefully, we’ll get a lot of people to come out and there will be a lot of energy and people will really get to know what we do and watch us throw and really get into it,” Michelle Carter, the current American women’s record holder said. “I just always want to go out there and do my best, I know what my best marks are, and I want to compete against myself.”

Just a year ago, she made a 66-foot, 5-inch throw at the 2013 championships in Iowa. She’s looking to make history again.

Her dad, former 49er Michael Carter, is by her side. He’s her biggest fan and trainer. Besides his on-field career, Michael Carter has a silver Olympic medal in shot put.

“He gets on my nerves sometimes, but I know he means well, and I know he wants the best for me, so you know I listen to him and it’s great to have him around and being my coach, so I get to see him every day,” Michelle Carter said.
