Storm Updates: Overnight thunderstorm, tornado warning in Northern California

(KTXL) — An atmospheric river is bringing more rain and winds to California, the latest in an ongoing series of storms that have battered the state since Dec. 27, 2022.

The National Weather Service issued river flood warnings for parts of El Dorado and Sacramento counties near the Consumnes River, and the area around Wilton is under an evacuation order in anticipation of flooding from the river.

Several school districts across Northern California announced they’d be closed Monday, some of which had lost power in the storm.

Sunday night, President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in response to the weather, which has resulted in the death of at least 7 people in Northern California, including four in the Sacramento region, since New Year’s Eve.

Evacuation centers have opened in Sacramento County for both people and livestock.

Over the weekend, at least one spot on a Cosumnes River levee that had previously been breached in the ongoing storms was secured using sandbags by the California Conservation Corps.

Jan. 10

7:15 p.m.

An evacuation warning has been issued in Vacaville for Thomasson Lane, Vines on 80 Apartments and Verdant at Green Valley Apartments due to flooding, according to the Vacaville Police Department.

Police said that Lake Curry is overspilling and that water will flow in Suisun Creek which could impact those areas Wednesday morning.

7:00 p.m.

An evacuation order has been issued for the Newman area of the San Joaquin River and East River Road, according to Stanislaus County. An evacuation warning has been issued west of River Road.

5:15 p.m.

Solano County issued a local emergency proclamation due to the storms that have hit the county since Dec. 27.

5:00 p.m.

The Stockton Unified School District will be opening all schools after being shut down due to the storm.

The storm caused power outages in more than half of the schools in the district causing food loss.

3:15 p.m.

Highway 50 eastbound has reopened, however, drivers should expect long delays.

2:15 p.m.

Highway 50 eastbound is closed at Sly Park due to heavy snow conditions, according to CHP Placerville. There is no estimated time it will reopen.

1:00 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, on Tuesday, in areas south of Yuba City including the greater Sacramento area, Stockton and Modesto thunderstorms are possible from noon until 8 p.m.

The thunderstorms would potentially bring lightning, gusty winds, heavy rain, small hail and possible funnel clouds and tornados.

11:00 a.m.

The Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services lifted the evacuation order in the Wilton area. An evacuation warning had been issued on Sunday ahead of an incoming storm, and it was updated to an evacuation order several hours later.

10:55 a.m.

Interstate-80 has been closed from Colfax to the Nevada state line in both directions due to strong winds causing whiteout conditions.

7:59 a.m.

The NWS is warning that travel conditions will be dangerous in the Sierra all day Tuesday due to continued snowfall.

Snow levels are expected to be between 4,500 feet and 5,500 feet with reduced visibility.

7:27 a.m.

Downed powerlines have closed Woodruff Lane in Yuba County between Highway 20 and Mathews Lane.

6:28 a.m.

SMUD is reporting that 19,757 customers are without power as they address more than 650 power outages across the county.

3:44 a.m.

A tornado warning has been issued for Modesto, Ceres, Riverbank and other communities in the San Joaquin Valley until 4:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

9:25 p.m.

The number of SMUD customers without power was brought down to 17,702.

7 p.m.

The National Guard currently has a crew and high-water vehicle in the Wilton area to assist with emergency operations.

6:45 p.m.

Stockton Unified School District announced they were canceling classes on Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions.

According to the school district, many of the schools have weather damage while the power outages have impacted their food supply.

5:15 p.m.

Five Sacramento area schools are still without power, according to the Sacramento City Unified School District.

The district canceled classes on Monday due to the storm, following other large districts across Northern California. 

SCUSD officials said they were in contact with SMUD but do not have a timeline for when full restoration of power would occur.

SCUSD said they would continue to monitor the weather and update families as needed, but they “look forward to welcoming back the majority of our students and staff tomorrow.”

5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, Stockton set a new daily record and recorded one inch of rain on Monday.

The NWS said that the previous daily record was .99 of an inch of rain which was set in 1995.

2 p.m.

According to Caltrans District 3, as of 2 p.m., all chain controls have been lifted on Interstate 80.

1:50 p.m.

With more heavy rain expected, Sacramento County is advising residents to call 311 to report any downed trees or flooding, 1-888-456-7683 to report power outages to SMUD and 211 for any general information.

1:20 p.m.

Stanislaus County declared a state of emergency saying and said the county is experiencing a high amount of flooding.

11:50 a.m.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) said power has been returned to more than 300,000 customers since Saturday night’s storm. The SMUD outage map shows around 34,000 customers still without power.

10:45 a.m.

Sacramento County said two unhoused people were found dead in tents under trees over the weekend.

10:10 a.m.

The National Weather Service extended an existing river flood warning for parts of Sacramento and El Dorado counties near the Consumnes River to early Monday evening.

The Sacramento Zoo said it would be closed through Tuesday as clean-up efforts continue and that the animals and staff were safe.

9:50 a.m.

Caltrans said there is flooding on Interstate 80 near Watt Avenue and on State Route 51 (Capital City Freeway) near Fulton and Watt Avenue.

Caltrans said the was also flooding on westbound lanes of I-80 near Winters Street which is near Roseville Road in North Sacramento.

9 a.m.

The City of Vacaville issued an evacuation warning for residents west of Peabody Road, south of Beelard Drive, east of Northwood Drive and North of Alamo Drive.

The city said there is a “potential threat to life and/or property.”
